....to nest, that is.
I'm FINALLY starting to feel like we're having a baby. I'm starting to feel the pressure of getting everything ready in time. Originally we were not going to do a nursery. We only have three rooms, two of which are occupied and the third is the guest room which we use frequently. And we are moving 4 months after the baby is born, if not sooner. It really doesn't make sense to do a nursery. Sorry, PCA. You will get the most fabulous nursery when we get all settled in.
We were going to put our daughter in a pack n play at the foot of the bed. I mean, the twins slept in it until they were 3 months old. What is one extra month for PCA?
Well, the guilt pangs started today... this just won't do for my baby. My baby deserves what our other children got. My baby deserves the best.
Therefore, she gets the sitting room/office in our master bedroom. We're going to clear it out for baby. Yay!
So I started toying with the idea of a bassinet. Not that I expect to have a super huge baby, I don't think I'm capable of that, but bassinets only hold a baby up to 15 pounds. This just won't do. So then I started toying with the idea of a mini-crib. My friend Ashley toyed with this for awhile. You can find some super cute bedding to go with... but you end up spending as much on bedding as you do the entire crib. Needless to say, this is our cheapest alternative. Probably about $500 to furnish the space with the necessities. This is DRASTICALLY less than what we paid to furnish the twins' nursery, but not that I'm going to talk about numbers. :)
For the twins' room we used PBK "French Rose" bedding and the PBK Kendall crib and dresser/top for the changing table. We also got the dream rocker and Bailey floor lamp. My mom ordered extra fabric and made the roman shade to match, since they didn't have a curtain I liked. She also made the twins a monogrammed tooth fairy pillows to match!
Here is the bedding:

Here is the crib:
I started thinking that we could just do this room as cheaply as possible and when we moved (aka when we have a private practice salary as opposed to a fellow's salary) we'd get what we really wanted. So I started looking around online and we even took an afternoon trip out to BRU to do some browsing. Here is the best option at BRU for a mini-crib:
Cheap. Cheap. Cheap. In every aspect of the word. But, I must admit, that I was pretty impressed that it was sturdy enough, but the mattress was laughable. I wouldn't put my cat to sleep on that mattress, let alone a child.
Not seeing any decent bedding for a mini-crib at BRU, I decided to take my search to the internet and this is what I found, "shabby chic chenille":

Cute. So my newfound feelings of guilt led me to do a room on the cheap ... she deserves a space that says "we are so happy you're here." I was so proud that I did something inexpensively. So proud of myself, I emailed Allen with my findings. You know what he said?
Why don't we just get the crib and dresser that we want, similar to what we got the girls.
A crib and dresser can always be moved. We are, after all, keeping the girls furniture... right?
I would rather just get what we want for the baby now and move it, rather that spending $400 on cheep stuff.
Let me know. We will work something out.
Love,
Edgar
Ummm... mmkay! I will gladly redirect my shopping efforts to something worthy of another baby Atchley. We said she deserves the best, right? P.S. An MD can't spell the word "cheap." Hmmm... love him!
I'm so happy!
Obvi, she needs this:

And this:

And, well, tomorrow is another day and I'm sure I'll find something I like better. I still think the twins have the best crib from PBK... would it be weird to get a third? And do I need to do PCA's bedding in different colors? Restoration Hardware has some cute stuff out now. And I've always loved Serena and Lily ...ah, who knows.
...but I will tell you this. I'm starting to feel the pressure and panic that we won't be ready in time! We went from doing nothing to creating a mini-space for her in less than 24 hours.
Let the fun begin!!
OMG. I'm also doing pink and white toile. Good minds must think alike (oh wait, if it'sa girl anyway....). Super cute Bec...happy you're getting what you want. As it should be :)
ReplyDeleteYea, that is so cute and I am so glad that you are setting up a space for her and that sounds like the perfect spot for a nursery. I agree every baby needs to know that they are welcome and special. My girls were spaced enough that they all have used the same crib (which is nice in a nostalgic sort of way) but they all got their own bedding. As a friend told me after my third daughter was born "every girl needs something that is just her own".
ReplyDeleteSo glad you are able to do what you really want! Love the crib and bedding!
ReplyDeleteCheep...ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!
